Surfer on Wave

by John Rutter
(Whakatane)

Captured the surfer going along the wave.

This is one of those puzzling photos – was it framed to make it look like the surfer was surfing along the fence, or was it just poorly framed?

I’m inclined to opt for the latter – just a poorly framed shot (sorry!).

Why have I come to this conclusion? Well, if we were going for a cheeky 'surfer-on-a-fence' then the fence itself really should be in focus. As it stands, the fence is blurred and just looks like it's in the way.

The thing about this photo that annoys me slightly is that the photo of the surfer is actually very good. The timing is perfect – the wave is beginning to break and the surfer is caught in a great pose.

But that fence really spoils it for me. I can't recommend a fix for this shot either. Cropping out the fence would be the obvious solution. But cropping close to the surfer will leave too few pixels to look good.

The only 'fix' so to speak, would need to be done at the time the photo was taken – moving to a higher position so that the camera is above the fence. It would also be worth zooming in on the surfer a bit.

Thanks for the submission John,

Ed.
