Horse Feathers

by Bruce Carlson
(Hayfield MN)

On Parade

On Parade

I took this shot with my old Petri SLR35 at a parade, not digital or edited but still curious what you think.

Personally, I think it's very good!

I'm amazed that there are any Petris still going mind. I suppose that's testament to the notion that they don't make 'em like they used to!

Back to the photo . . . in black and white this works really well. It's a simple composition (which tends to work well) and there are nice punchy blacks and some bright whites in there.

The composition is of course the most important aspect. And it must have been tempting to take a photo of a horse. Nothing wrong with that, but it wouldn't have been anything special.

However, focussing on a particular detail in a scene can work wonders - and that's the case here. There's more on using the details to make an impact here.

Thanks for the submission Bruce,

Darrell.
