"It's a new year! Time to learn new things. Ever fancied yourself a photographer?"

It's the New Year, a time when many invest in their physical health by going on diets, eating healthier and doing more exercise. Why not break away from the norm and invest in a new hobby like amateur photography?

We all love taking photos and since photos sharing sites have increased it is rare for someone to leave the house without some form of camera, whether it digital or phone. The are many opportunities to take photos every day such as memorable occasions, holidays, or simply when we pass something beautiful or thought provoking.

By following our beginner's tips and investing a little time, effort and money you could make photography into a worthwhile hobby.

Equipment

The obvious place to start is equipment; however don't go flashing the cash too early on. Some hobbies are not for everyone, so make sure you genuinely enjoy photography before spending hundreds on the latest and greatest camera.

Try to find a decent camera at a low price. It is possible to get brilliant photos with a straightforward point and shoot camera. The more photos you take the better your technique will become and the more you will know about the type of camera that will suit you.

Do your research on the best models for amateurs and consider buying them on second hand sites. Why not have a browse through some second hand shops - you'd be amazed what gems you can find!

While it is important to start simple, you will still be developing your skills. To help a wobbly hand buy a tripod, these are available in all shapes and sizes, many of which are small and light enough to be kept in your bag until you spot something worthy of taking snapping.

Location

Photography is a perfect excuse to go out on a day trip. By venturing out into an unknown location, you can find yourself inspired to take photos of things you do not normally see on a day to day basis.

Day trips do not have to be expensive either, for example, recently Groupon Manchester deals have offered lots of discount trips from the Manchester Wheel to tickets for live acts; perfect opportunities to practice your photography skills.

Activities & Events

As well as location, consider taking your camera to events and activities. Races, gigs and festivals are all perfect for finding unique photography opportunities and can seriously test your reactions and photography skills.

Stuck for event ideas? Groupon local and national deals offer an extensive selection to peak your interest; Liverpool deals for instance have recently offered discount horse riding and golf lessons, a great opportunity to snap your friends and family in action.

Share

Get your work out there! While you may not have the opportunity to sell your work (just yet!) there are heaps of photo sharing sites such as Facebook and Flickr where you can display your photos.

Ask for feedback from friends and family and post your work in photography groups, you may just get noticed.

Be Confident!

Lastly, be confident. If you are truly hooked on photography, at this point you will be taking your camera everywhere with you, so don't be afraid of appearing in a few pictures. If you are feeling the January blues and need a boost, why not treat yourself to some pampering so you can truly shine in your photographs?

Newcastle deals on Groupon have a strong focus on beauty, recently offering discounted teeth whitening. Why not buy yourself and your friends a deal so you can all be confident when you shout "Cheese!" at the camera?
